Squad objectives and coaching

In 2015 we achieved our second highest place at HoRR for a generation. Unfortunately we fell at the Qualifying Races for the Thames Cup at Henley Royal Regatta with a margin of approximately 2.5s. A robust plan has been developed to ensure that we build on the pleasing 2015 HoRR result and then maintain that form through to the Summer. The performance group will be privileged to be coached by Matt Bedford, who has represented Great Britain at U23 level. The development and beginner groups will be coached by Doug Parnham and Julie Lewis. Doug competed at three Olympic Games for GB in his kayak before switching to rowing. He has since been involved with the national squad and is a life member of Putney Town having been instrumental in the reconstruction of the club in the 1990s. Julie previously rowed for our women’s squad during a particularly successful period, winning medals at the National Championships and has been involved with coaching the men’s squads for a number of years.

Training programme

Water sessions take place primarily at the weekend, although in the Summer this extends to routine midweek sessions. The training programme is designed to allow our best athletes to achieve their goals and the performance group will complete eight sessions each week, with a minimum of four on the water. The programme is available for all of the men’s squad, and enables those in the development groups to strive towards the performance group, but is not mandatory. We value a sensible work/life/rowing balance. Most of our oarsmen follow demanding career paths when not rowing, and so the programme and our approach reflects this, ensuring that the quality of our work is high, acknowledging that we cannot fulfil the quantity available to full-time athletes!

Training camp is an important part of our preparations for the Summer. In recent years we have travelled to Brive, France and Banyoles, Spain to take advantage of warmer weather, buoyed courses, flat water and the lack of distractions from the real world!

Equipment

Our fleet is one of the finest on the Tideway and is constantly being upgraded and added to. Our top eights and fours are extremely high quality wing-rigged Empachers, which serve us well having previously served the likes of GB, and Cambridge University. We also have a wide range of good quality pairs, doubles and singles; which allow us to train and race in all boat classes. The two gym areas are both well stocked with an extensive free-weights area in the boat shed as well as 24 Concept 2 ergos in the main gym accompanied by exercise bikes, Concept 2 sliders and training mirrors.

Social

Aside from rowing, we uphold the Putney Town reputation for being the Tideway’s friendliest club. From a relaxing post Sunday morning outing breakfast to the squad Christmas Party we make time to enjoy each other’s company outside of a boat or the gym! The club has a lively bar which all our squads make good use of and also plays host to a number of club events throughout the year.
