Coxing

Freeda coxingThe job of a cox is vital in rowing. In bigger boats, the cox plays an essential role in steering a safe course but perhaps more importantly keeps the rowers on their toes following the race or training plan. A good cox is worth their weight in gold (so ideally as light as possible!).

Being a cox has many benefits including the thrill of winning races and knowing their contribution may have been the difference between winning and losing. A cox at Putney Town not only gets to be part of a competitive crew, including the possibility of racing at Henley Royal Regatta, but can also build some great friendships and enjoy the equally active social side of the club. And if that wasn’t enough, Putney Town recognises the contribution coxes make and not only do the squads lavish them with love, buying them breakfast, cakes and beer but there is no charge for membership to the club.

And just as the club has introduced many people to rowing, we have introduced many people to coxing too. New coxes get support from experienced coaches and strokes and are soon entering and winning in races with their crews.

If you are an experienced cox or completely new to the sport and would like to try your hand at it, please get in touch with one of the captains.
